Photon Bubbles in the Circumstellar Envelopes of Young Massive Stars

چکیده

We show that the optically-thick dusty envelopes surrounding young highmass stars are subject to the photon bubble instability. The infrared radiation passing through the envelope amplifies magnetosonic disturbances, with growth rates in our local numerical radiation MHD calculations that are consistent with a linear analysis. Modes with wavelengths comparable to the gas pressure scale height grow by more than two orders of magnitude in a thousand years, reaching non-linear amplitudes within the envelope lifetime. If the magnetic pressure in the envelope exceeds the gas pressure, the instability develops into trains of propagating shocks. Radiation escapes readily through the low-density material between the shocks, enabling accretion to continue despite the Eddington limit imposed by the dust opacity. The supersonic motions arising from the photon bubble instability can help explain the large velocity dispersions of hot molecular cores, while conditions in the shocked gas are suitable for maser emission. We conclude that the photon bubble instability may play a key role in the formation of massive stars. Circumstellar Nebulae in Young Supernova Remnants

Supernovae descendent from massive stars explode in media that have been modified by their progenitors’ mass loss and UV radiation. The supernova ejecta will first interact with the circumstellar material shed by the progenitors at late evolutionary stages, and then interact with the interstellar material. Circumstellar nebulae in supernova remnants can be diagnosed by their small expansion vel...

Episodic Mass Loss and Pre-SN Circumstellar Envelopes

I discuss observational clues concerning episodic mass-loss properties of massive stars in the time before the final supernova explosion. In particular, I will focus on the mounting evidence that LBVs and related stars are candidates for supernova progenitors, even though current paradigms place them at the end of core-H burning. Namely, conditions in the immediate circumstellar environment wit...

Wide-field Infrared Imaging Polarimetry of the Ngc 6334 Region: a Nest of Infrared Reflection Nebulae

We report the detection of eighteen infrared reflection nebulae (IRNe) in the J , H , & Ks linear polarimetric observations of the NGC 6334 massive star-formation complex, of which 16 IRNe are new discoveries. Our images cover ∼180 square arcminutes, one of the widest near-infrared polarization data in star-formation regions so far. These IRNe are most likely associated with embedded young OB s...

Correlation between the spatial distribution of circumstellar disks and massive stars in the open cluster NGC 6611. Compiled catalog and cluster parameters

Context. The observation of young stars with circumstellar disks suggests that the disks are dissipated, starting from the inner region, by the radiation of the central star and eventually by the formation of rocky planetesimals, over a time scale of several million years. It was also shown that strong UV radiation emitted by nearby massive stars can heat a circumstellar disk up to some thousan...

OBSERVATIONS AND MODELING OF THE 2 – 25 μm EMISSION FROM HIGH MASS PROTOSTELLAR OBJECT CANDIDATES

This is a report on detailed modeling of young high-mass protostellar candidates during their most embedded and obscured phases. We performed narrowband mid-infrared imaging of three candidate high-mass protostellar objects in G11.94-0.62, G29.96-0.02, and G45.07+0.13 at Gemini Observatory using the Thermal-Region Camera and Spectrograph (T-ReCS). The sources were imaged through up to 11 narrow...
